When navigating an unplanned pregnancy, many women consider abortion as an option. It’s a deeply personal decision—and one that deserves thoughtful reflection, reliable information, and supportive care. At Eleo Family Center, we want you to feel informed and equipped before making any choice.

Abortion, like any medical procedure, carries potential physical risks. Understanding what’s involved can help you take the next step with greater awareness. If you’re exploring your options and want to learn more, we welcome you to reach out to our center for educational support free of charge.

Abortion Procedures

We provide evidence-based education and consultations to explain procedures, side effects, and risks so you can make a fully informed decision.

There are two primary types of abortion: medical (also known as the abortion pill) and surgical abortion. The method available typically depends on how far along the pregnancy is.

Medical Abortion (The Abortion Pill)

Medical abortion is approved by the FDA for use through 10 weeks of pregnancy (70 days from the first day of your last menstrual period). Some medical professionals recommend using it only through nine weeks due to decreasing effectiveness after that point.

A medical abortion involves two drugs. Mifepristone, which blocks the hormone progesterone, stops the pregnancy from progressing. Misoprostol, taken afterward, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortions are typically used for pregnancies beyond 10 weeks. Early surgical procedures often involve suction or vacuum aspiration. In later stages, dilation and curettage (D&C) or dilation and evacuation (D&E) may be performed.

Surgical abortions may require dilation of the cervix and involve the use of surgical tools. Depending on the procedure and setting, local or general anesthesia is often administered.

Side Effects and Risks

The following is a list of the risks of a medical abortion and the risks of a surgical procedure.

Medical Abortion Side Effects:

  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Diarrhea or digestive discomfort
  • Fever or chills
  • Headache
  • Bleeding and cramping (these always occur)

Medical Abortion Risks:

  • An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive symptoms such as upset stomach

Surgical Abortion Side Effects:

  • Cramping

Surgical Abortion Risks:
